How to get to Itacaré from Ilhéus or Salvador

From Ilhéus airport (IOS)

Ilhéus Jorge Amado airport is about 3 km from downtown Ilhéus and is the closest airport to Itacaré. You have two good ways on from there.

By bus. Take a taxi from the airport to the Ilhéus bus station. The Itacaré line is run by Rota Transportes. For 13 October 2026, ticket sites listed executive class departures at 12:00 and 17:00, for R$36.30 to R$36.55 plus fees, taking 1h50 to 2h. Times change, so check with Rota or at the station on the day.

By private transfer. Door to door in about an hour and a half. When we checked, Bahia Terra charged R$370 per leg for one to three people and R$750 for four to ten. Send your flight number when you book, since the pickup time is set with the driver.

The road is the BA-001, which follows the coast through stretches of forest. It is winding, so allow time.

From Salvador by ferry

The ferry leaves from the São Joaquim terminal in Salvador. The small boats by the Mercado Modelo go to Mar Grande, which is a different route. The crossing to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island, takes 60 to 80 minutes.

Fares since 6 March 2026, per person: R$7.20 Monday to Friday and R$9.50 on weekends and holidays. The operator's website also sells a booked slot (hora marcada) with a 30% service fee: R$9.36 and R$12.35.

From the Bom Despacho bus station, Cidade Sol and Águia Branca run buses to Itacaré. For 13 October 2026 there were departures from 6:20 to 15:20, taking 5h to 5h40, with fares from R$89.80 (conventional) to R$118.23 (executive). Add the ferry queue and the wait for the bus and you are looking at about seven hours from Salvador.

By car. The same ferry carries cars: a small car pays R$64.70 Monday to Friday and R$91.70 on weekends, or R$84.11 and R$119.21 with a booked slot. From Bom Despacho you drive the BA-001 south to Itacaré, 250 to 270 km in all. Driving all the way around the bay is over 350 km.

From Salvador by plane

Azul flies direct from Salvador to Ilhéus, about an hour in the air, on some days of the week. In searches made in October 2026, the lowest one-way fare we saw was R$191, for 12 November. After landing, follow one of the Ilhéus routes above. It suits people arriving in Salvador on an international flight who would rather skip the ferry queue.

From the Itacaré bus station to Bairro Concha

The bus station is in town. From there, take a taxi or ask your guesthouse to collect you. The deck is at Pousada Tikuna, Rua Bromélia, 11, Bairro Concha, a few minutes' walk uphill from Praia da Concha. Give the driver the street and the pousada's name.

Before your first class

If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, save your first class for the next morning. Power Vinyasa runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 to 9:00, and Saturday, 8:00 to 9:30. Yoga Sculpt runs Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30. Classes take up to 10 people and Saturday fills, so book on the calendar as soon as your dates are set. Mats, blocks and hand weights are on the deck; bring water and a towel. Everything else is on your first visit.

Is there a boat straight from Salvador to Itacaré?

No. The ferry crosses from Salvador to Bom Despacho, and the rest of the trip is by road.

What is the cheapest way from Salvador?

Ferry plus bus. On a weekday, the crossing and a conventional bus ticket come to about R$97 per person at October 2026 prices.

Do I need to book the ferry ahead?

It is optional. A booked slot, sold only on the Internacional Travessias website, holds your crossing time for 30% more.

What if I arrive on a Sunday?

There is no class on Sunday. The first class of the week is Power Vinyasa on Monday at 8:00.
