Can a beginner do Power Yoga? Your first class on the deck

Yes. Power Yoga has a reputation for being hard, but a good class bends to whoever is on the mat. At Espaço Leve Alma in Itacaré, Power Vinyasa and Yoga Sculpt are both taught with options called out loud the whole way through, and you decide how far to go.

Why the name puts people off

"Power" sounds like a class for people who already know what they're doing. The history says otherwise. When Beryl Bender Birch started calling her New York classes power yoga in the late 1980s, the point was to make an unfamiliar practice feel approachable to Americans. The name was meant to get people in the door.

What "power" actually describes is the pace: one pose rolls into the next on the breath, and you sweat. None of that takes experience. It takes listening to your breath and knowing where your limit is that day.

How the class adapts to you

On the deck, every class is taught with options, called out while the sequence is running. In practice that means:

  • An easier version of every pose. The teacher tells you where to go easy and where you can go further. You pick yours without having to ask.
  • Blocks within reach. The blocks are on the deck, and they bring the floor closer when a pose isn't there yet.
  • Breaks are fine. If your breath gets short, stop, breathe, and come back when you're ready. Nobody's counting.
  • A teacher keeping an eye out. Tell them before class that it's your first time, and they'll watch you more closely.

In Yoga Sculpt the weights are light and only come in for parts of the class. Even CorePower Yoga, the US chain where the format started, tells first-timers to go at their own pace and rest when they need to.

In the studio's reviews, students describe turning up as complete beginners.

What your first class is like

You walk a few minutes uphill from Praia da Concha to Pousada Tikuna, at Rua Bromélia, 11. The deck is wood, covered and open air, under the trees. Shoes stay at the step.

Your mat is already there. Classes take up to 10 people, and they're taught in English, Portuguese or both, depending on who's in the room.

At the start, with everyone's eyes closed, the teacher asks who'd rather not have hands-on adjustments. A small sign is enough, and nobody else sees it. Then it's an hour of breath and movement, and at the end a few minutes lying still. By then the sea is usually the loudest thing on the deck.

Your first class, step by step

  1. Pick a class. Power Vinyasa on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 to 9:00, and Saturday, 8:00 to 9:30. Yoga Sculpt on Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30.
  2. Book it. On the class calendar, paid by credit card online. To pay in cash or by Pix, message the studio on WhatsApp. Saturday tends to fill, so book early.
  3. Pack the basics. Water, a towel, and clothes you can move in.
  4. Get there a few minutes early. Enough time to find the place, pick a mat and catch your breath before you start.
  5. Tell the teacher. One line does it: "It's my first class."

Which class to try first

Both welcome beginners. If you'd like to start with just your body and your breath, go for Power Vinyasa. If you like music and don't mind a sweat, Yoga Sculpt is a good way in too. The difference between the styles is in Power Vinyasa vs Vinyasa vs Power Yoga, and Yoga Sculpt has its own guide in What is Yoga Sculpt?.

Here for a week? The 4-class pack is R$220, to use within 30 days. That's enough to try both and go back to the one you liked.

Anything else you want to know before you walk up is on the first visit page.

Questions

Do I need to be flexible to start?

No. You start with the body you have today. That's what the blocks and the options are for.

I'm out of shape. Will I keep up?

You keep up with yourself. Stopping to breathe is part of the class, and the teacher calls out the easier version of every pose.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. There's no fixed group and nothing to sign up for: book any class, any week.

What if the class is full?

Select it on the calendar anyway to join the waitlist. If a mat opens, you get an email.
