When to visit Itacaré: rain, sun and surf month by month

Itacaré works all year: it rains in every month, but least in September, August and January. March to June is the wettest stretch. Come in the southern winter for bigger waves, and July to November for whales.

Rainfall in Itacaré month by month

Itacaré has no official weather station of its own. The nearest one with a climate normal from INMET, Brazil's national weather institute, is at Canavieiras, on the same southern Bahia coast, about 150 km south in a straight line. The averages below cover 1991 to 2020. Read them as a picture of the coast's climate, not a forecast for your week.

"Rainy days" counts days with at least 1 mm. INMET does not publish that figure for July and August at this station. The sea column is the satellite-measured water temperature at Itacaré, averaged over 2024 to 2026 and rounded.

What the table tells you

  • April and March are the wettest months, at around 185 mm each. May and June are close behind, near 170 mm.
  • September is the driest month, with 88 mm. August and January also stay under 120 mm.
  • It rains in every month. The year adds up to more than 1,750 mm. Even in June, the month with the most rainy days, nearly half the days get less than 1 mm.
  • January is the sunniest month, with about 250 hours of sunshine. June has the fewest, near 150.

Travel blogs disagree on the rainy season. Some say March to May, others March to July plus November. The official series backs autumn (March to June here in the south) as the wettest stretch, and shows that November gets its share too.

Air and sea temperature

The Brazilian guide Melhores Destinos gives average highs of 28 to 29 °C from November to March. In the southern winter, highs sit between 25 and 26 °C and lows reach 21 °C. It is warm all year, and July mornings call for one light layer at most.

The sea follows with a delay. It is warmest in April, near 28 °C, and coolest from August to November, around 24 to 25 °C.

Surf: when the swell comes in

Itacaré has waves all year, and Tiririca is the town's surf beach. Sources disagree on the best season. The Brazilian blog Esse Mundo é Nosso picks winter, July and August above all, when cold fronts help build bigger waves. Tripbase names June to November, with swell from the South Atlantic. The Mondo Surf guide says Tiririca works best on an east swell and a mid tide. Check the day's forecast before you paddle out.

If you surf and want to fit class around the waves, there is a routine in yoga for surfers.

Humpback whales

The town hall gives July to November as humpback season on the Bahia coast. You can spot them from the sand at Concha, Resende and Tiririca, and boat trips leave from Praia da Concha.

High season

December and January are the busiest months, and prices in town go up. If you want quiet and less rain, August, September and October line up well. On the deck, Saturday fills first whatever the month.

What mornings on the deck are like

The deck sits at Pousada Tikuna in the Concha neighbourhood, covered and open air, under the trees. Power Vinyasa runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 to 9:00, and Saturday, 8:00 to 9:30. Yoga Sculpt runs Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30.

In summer the morning is already warm when you arrive, so bring water and a towel. In winter the air is fresher at the start of class and the light comes in lower through the leaves. When it rains, the roof keeps the water off and class carries on to the sound of rain overhead. In heavy rain, any change goes out on WhatsApp and Instagram before class. For the rest of a wet day, see rainy day in Itacaré.

Classes take up to 10 people. See the classes and book ahead.

Questions

Is June a good time to go?

June has the fewest sunshine hours in the series and the most rainy days of the months with data. On the other hand, the sea is still near 26 °C and the winter swells start to arrive.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in July?

Yes. The water is around 25 °C in July, only a little cooler than in summer.

Does class on the deck happen when it rains?

Yes. The deck is covered, so light or steady rain does not stop class. In heavy rain, any change is posted on WhatsApp and Instagram before class.

Why use Canavieiras figures instead of Itacaré?

Itacaré has no station with an official climate normal. Canavieiras is the nearest INMET station on the same stretch of coast, with a 1991 to 2020 series.
