Beaches you can walk to from Concha (and the Prainha trail)

Without a car, you can walk from Concha to four beaches in a row: Resende, Tiririca, Costa and Ribeira, all under half an hour from the deck. From Ribeira, a trail of about 40 minutes leads to Prainha, and it is worth doing with a guide.

Four beaches on one road

Resende, Tiririca, Costa and Ribeira line up along the Caminho das Praias road, which starts in Pituba and ends at Ribeira. According to Melhores Destinos, only about 500 metres separate the first from the last. You can walk along the road or, on some stretches, over the rocks by the sea.

Staying in Concha makes it easy: up to Pituba, onto the road, and the first beach is fifteen minutes away.

Walking times from the deck

Distances are from the OpenStreetMap walking route, starting at the deck on Rua Bromélia. The times are the router's, at a steady pace; with hills and heat, give yourself extra. From the sand at Concha, add about 5 minutes.

Praia do Resende

Small and fringed with coconut palms. Natural pools form at low tide, and the town hall mentions it as a favourite spot to relax and meditate. You get there by a short path down from the Caminho das Praias road. The waves draw surfers too, so watch the sea before you go in.

Praia da Tiririca

Itacaré's classic surf beach, with strong, steady waves and a regular venue for surf contests. It has kiosks, a grassy area, rocks and a skate bowl. If you swim, go in where other people are and stay out on big-swell days.

Praia da Costa

A narrow cove between Tiririca and Ribeira, reached by a short trail, with no beach bars at all. The sea pulls hard here: the Viciada em Viajar guide says the waves are dangerous enough to keep even surfers away. Come for a walk and to sit on the sand. Bring water.

Praia da Ribeira

The end of the road. A stream runs into the beach and forms a freshwater pool, with Atlantic Forest around it, and the sea is usually calmer than at its neighbours. Parking is tight, one more reason to arrive on foot. This is where the Prainha trail starts.

The Prainha trail

Many people rate Prainha as the most beautiful beach in Itacaré: white sand, blue water, green hills on both sides. The trail leaves from Ribeira and takes about 40 minutes one way.

  • Go with a guide. The trail has no signs and plenty of forks; it is easy to get lost. Guides usually wait in the Ribeira car park.
  • Carry little of value. The same travel guide notes that robberies on the trail were common years ago. Going in a group with a guide covers both points.
  • Bring water and food. The town hall says Prainha has no facilities.
  • No signal. Most of Itacaré's rural area has no mobile coverage.

Safety basics

  • Tides: for the Resende pools and for walking over the rocks between beaches, check the Itacaré tide table before you set out.
  • Daylight: start the Prainha trail in the morning and be back well before dark.
  • Currents: at Costa, stay on the sand; at Tiririca, respect the waves and swim near other people.
  • Sun: hat, sunscreen and water, even for a short walk.

Before or after class

Power Vinyasa runs on the deck on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 to 9:00, and Saturday, 8:00 to 9:30. Finish class, take the road, and by 9:15 you are at Resende while the beach is still quiet, with the day's tide already checked. On Tuesday and Thursday, Yoga Sculpt runs 9:30 to 10:30, a good fit if you prefer the beach in the afternoon.

The full timetable is on the classes page, and each class has few spots: book ahead. For the rest of the neighbourhood, see the Praia da Concha guide.

Questions

Can I see all four beaches in one day?

Easily, since they sit right next to each other. Start at Ribeira and work your way back, stopping at each one, or do it the other way round.

Which one is best for a calm swim?

Resende at low tide, and the stream pool at Ribeira. For properly calm sea, head back to Concha.

Can I take a taxi or motorbike taxi instead?

Yes. All four beaches can be reached by car, taxi or motorbike taxi, though parking at Ribeira is small.

How long should I set aside for Prainha?

Count the walk to Ribeira, about 40 minutes of trail each way and your time on the beach. In practice, a whole morning.
