Why Concha
Praia da Concha is where the Rio de Contas meets the sea, and that is what keeps the water calm. The town hall describes it as a quiet beach with beach bars, good for swimming and for paddling: stand up paddle, kayak or outrigger canoe. The Viciada em Viajar guide recommends it for families with small children.
It is also a town beach. There are restaurants on the sand, guesthouses (pousadas) on the streets above, and the small town centre close by. You can spend the whole day without a car.
Sunset at Ponta do Xaréu
At the left end of the beach are the rocks of Ponta do Xaréu, facing the river mouth. From there you look across the water to Coroinha and Pontal beaches, with the sun going down behind them. Locals and visitors gather on the rocks late every afternoon.
There is no bar out there, only the odd street vendor. Take water, and use your phone light to get back over the rocks after dark.
What is within walking distance
The distances below come from the OpenStreetMap walking route, starting at the Espaço Leve Alma deck on Rua Bromélia. The times are the router's, at a steady pace: with the hills, the heat and a stop or two, allow a few minutes more.
| Place | Distance | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| Praia da Concha | 400 m | 5 min |
| Ponta do Xaréu | 500 m | 7 min |
| Start of Rua Pituba | 800 m | 11 min |
| Praia do Resende | 1.1 km | 14 min |
| Praia da Tiririca | 1.2 km | 16 min |
| Praia da Ribeira | 1.7 km | 23 min |
Rua Pituba is the street with most of the cafés and restaurants; for food after class, see after-class breakfast near Concha and Rua Pituba. Resende, Tiririca, Costa and Ribeira come one after another along the Caminho das Praias road, and the walk, plus the trail to Prainha, is in beaches you can walk to from Concha.
Praia do Pontal, across the river
Pontal is the sandbar on the far side of the river mouth, with calm river on one side and surf on the other. You can only get there by boat, a short crossing. There are no beach bars or kiosks, so take water and snacks and agree a pickup time with the boatman. Late afternoon is a lovely time to be there.
Where to stay
Concha has many of Itacaré's pousadas. The 360meridianos accommodation guide describes the ones here as larger and more comfortable, often with a pool and garden, and notes that the town centre is close. In practice, staying here means waking up a short walk downhill from calm water, going to the beach in flip-flops and walking to Pituba for dinner.
If you come with a car, you will barely use it: everything in the table above is on foot. Car, taxi or an agency tour come into play for the waterfalls and the trail beaches further out.
From the deck to the beach
The Espaço Leve Alma deck is at Pousada Tikuna, Rua Bromélia, 11, a few minutes' walk uphill from Praia da Concha. It is a wooden deck, covered and open-air, under the trees.
- Power Vinyasa: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 to 9:00, and Saturday, 8:00 to 9:30. On the first Saturday of the month, class ends with a sound bath.
- Yoga Sculpt: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30.
You finish class, walk down the hill and you are in the sea five minutes later. If it is your first time, the first visit page explains what to bring and how to find us. Classes take up to 10 people, so book ahead, Saturdays especially.
Good to know
- Opening hours for restaurants, boats and tours change with the season. This guide was checked October 2026; confirm before you go.
- Concha is the river beach. The beaches facing the open sea, such as Tiririca, have strong waves and call for a different kind of swim.
Questions
Is Praia da Concha good for children?
It is the usual pick for families, because the river mouth keeps the sea gentle. Stay close to young children in the water all the same.
When should I get to Ponta do Xaréu for sunset?
Come in the late afternoon, before the sun drops, so you can pick a spot on the rocks. Dozens of people gather on the rocks every evening.
Can I go straight from class to the beach?
Yes. The deck is about 400 metres from the sand, downhill. Mats, blocks and hand weights are on the deck, so you only bring water, a towel and your swimsuit underneath.
Do I need a car if I stay in Concha?
Not for the beach, food or class. For waterfalls and trail beaches outside town, take a taxi, drive, or join an agency tour.
